The wind has died down, the Julyers are on their way out, the marine fauna is in full swing – an EXCEPTIONAL outing on Thursday, July 31st!
Robin and Théo, the sailors, Baptiste, the captain, and Thomas, the naturalist guide, embarked the holidaymakers at 8 a.m. to try and spot the marine mammals.
Beyond our expectations!
Dolphins galore! 🐬🐬
First there were 4, then 6… then 15 bottlenose dolphins surrounding Azur!
The only species of cetacean that regularly frequents the coastline was seen in numbers, but that’s not all!
This is the breeding season for bottlenose dolphins, and we saw 3 babies! Newborns, just over a meter long, one of them gave us some incredible jumps! Then it was the adults who started jumping, but the kind of jumps the Leucate Evasion Marine crew has rarely seen! Some of them were over 4 meters high!

Birds, fish…
I guess the animals had spread the word!
We counted :
- 2 black-headed gulls
- Several common terns on their way out of port, a dozen or so on their way in.
- A little tern on its way back, along the beautiful beaches of Leucate
- Dozens of Yellow-legged Gulls
- A young gannet! Bigger than the gulls, he was right in the middle of them – magnificent!
- A young puffin on the water! So pretty!
- On the fish front, we had a magnificent sighting of a sunfish! It was very dark in color, which is quite rare for this species. Motionless at the surface, it captured the sun’s rays to recharge its batteries. This one was about 80cm long, but it’s the biggest bony fish in the world, reaching 3m in length and weighing over 2 tons!
