Offshore naturalist outing 📸🌊

The week of July 14th was rich in observations for the crew of Leucate Evasion Marine and its holidaymakers.

Baptiste the captain, Thomas the naturalist guide and the sailors got out their binoculars and searched for animals in the open sea!

Fine weather for outings on Tuesday morning (15th) and Thursday morning (17th).

  • Yellow-legged Gulls, hundreds of them, including many juveniles (under 4 years old)
  • A few common terns, cousins of gulls, are more common near beaches.
  • A Scopoli shearwater, a large bird with distinctive colors
  • A black-headed kittiwake on the water, with a bright red bill.

L’Azur is still at 100% observation this year, as the team was able to see a dozen dolphins on Tuesday, and another dozen on Thursday!

Since there are some 75,000 bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus in Latin) in the Mediterranean, there’s no guarantee it’s the same group, but it was a great victory for the holidaymakers, some of whom realized their dreams of seeing dolphins in their natural habitat!

On Tuesday, everyone was lucky enough to see a baby dolphin accompanied by its mother, as this is the breeding season for bottlenose dolphins. However, the baby weighs 20kg at birth and measures 1m. Big baby

On Thursday, this time the dolphins were very playful and came to see the boat up close. What a chance for visitors to look a dolphin in the eye! They came under the boat of their own free will, and it’s forbidden to chase a dolphin, to get closer than 100m or to block its path (fortunately). However, if the dolphins decide to come, we turn off the engine and enjoy the show.

à… scales? 🐢

Yes, those are sea turtles we’ve been seeing along the French coastline in recent weeks. Loggerhead turtles.

We haven’t had a chance to see any in the sea yet, but it’s egg-laying season, and the turtles are coming more and more, due to global warming.

While the first in the history of the Pyrénées Orientales was last year, Argelès sur Mer and Le Barcarès have witnessed clutches on the beaches in recent days. Another is still awaiting verification at Leucate.

Peace of mind required! These are fragile, endangered animals, and the nests are protected by the environmental police, who work tirelessly to monitor the eggs.

As far as fish scales are concerned, no luck this week, no sharks, no tuna, it’s all part of the game! We’re in the wild 🏞️
