The season is launched! The first dolphin-watching trip aboard the Azur took place on Tuesday, July 1, and although there was no guarantee of seeing any, as we were in their natural habitat, the mission was accomplished!✨
A dozen dolphins! 🐬
Baptiste the captain, Thomas the naturalist guide, the whole crew and the forty or so holidaymakers on board set off in the fresh air at 9am and headed offshore 🌊
Right from the start, a number of birds follow us, and they’re Yellow-legged Gulls, very common on the Mediterranean coast and yet virtually endemic, i.e. found nowhere else, or almost nowhere else, but in the Mediterranean.
After 2 hours of navigation and explanations from Thomas on what can be found in the Mediterranean and conservation issues, the birds help us spot the bottlenose dolphins ‘ breath and their fins.
A dozen bottlenose dolphins are feeding not far from a fishing boat, and a hundred gulls are escorting them.
It’s shaping up to be a great summer! ☀️
That’s not all! 🐟
With the naturalist on board Leucate Evasion Marine, we were able to identify other species of seabirds in danger of extinction: shearwaters.
Two species were present that day: the Balearic shearwater, one of the world’s most endangered birds, and the Scopoli shearwater, one of the most beautiful.
We were also able to observe fish, not least the symbol of protection in the Mediterranean, the bluefin tuna. They were hunting, because yes, it’s a predatory fish that feeds on other fish. There were almost a hundred of them, divided into several groups. Excellent news for biodiversity 🍀
Then we quietly set off for home, with a juvenile black-headed gull in tow.
